Star Trek Character of the Day

Star Trek Charater of the day is Data played by Brent Spiner

Data:

BSOD vs Data Pictures, Images and Photos

Bio:
Data is an android built by Dr. Noonien Soong. Data is possessed of capabilities of strength, agility and computation that far exceed those of humans, or most other living beings, but he would in his own words "...give it all up to be human." This draws a parallel which is voiced by Commander William Riker, who calls him "Pinocchio" on a number of occasions. He was found in 2338 on Omicron Theta, a planet believed to be his place of creation. This was also the home, for a time, of the scientist Dr. Noonien Soong, Data's creator, and in whose image he is made.Data's brain circuitry is positronic [based on positron (anti-electron) decay]. This idea was first postulated by Science Fiction author Isaac Azimov in the 20th century, but long thought to be impossible. Dr. Noonien Soong was responsible for finally making the technology work, and used these "positronic brains" of greater or lesser complexity in all his android models. Known other Soong-type androids and their stati are as follows: Lore: deactivated, B-4(A.K.A. Ken*) : functioning, Dr. Julianna Tamber : functioning, Lal: deactivated.Data, perhaps in gratitude to the Starfleet officers who found him, joined Starfleet. His application for entry to the academy was the subject of objection by member of the review board Dr. Bruce Maddox: that Data "was not a Sentient Being". Since Dr. Maddox was the only objector, and his objection was dismissed by the rest of the review board, Data's entry was granted.Data distinguished himself on many occasions, and was decorated for Valor and service many times. He was assigned to the new Federation Flagship, the USS Enterprise-D, at or shortly after it's commissioning date, and is present from the very first records concerning that ship's missions. In 2365, Dr. Maddox again pressed his claim, that Data was not a Sentient Being, this time legally, when he forced a hearing on the matter after Data attempted to resign from Starfleet to stop a transfer order and experimental refit. JAG officer Captain Phillipa Louvois presided, Enterprise Captain Jean-Luc Picard acted as counsel for the defense, and Enterprise XO, Commander William T Riker, represented for the plaintiff. Dr. Maddox's claim was that since Data was not sentient, he was therefore property, and could neither resign nor refuse the transfer. Data's sentience was proven to within a reasonable question, and his own search for what Captain Louvois termed as his "soul" continued.Data's personal growth proved to be continual, but sporadic, until the momentous occasion when built an emotions-chip that he reverse-engineered from a damaged one. His creator had made the original for him, but his brother, Lore, stole it while impersonating him, and the chip was damaged when Lore was forcibly deactivated.Data was destroyed in the year 2378 while rescuing Captain Picard from a Romulan prototype warship, commanded by a renegade romulan-created clone of Picard.*Ken is a name used for the android officially named "B-4" by Star Trek Fans who recognize that Dr. Soong's other androids have names that mean types of Knowledge. Data means information, Lore means myths and legends, Ken means understanding that is not comprehended intellectually. Exceptions to this "knowledge" rule are as follows: Julianna was made to be like, and named after, Dr. Soong's wife who had died, and Lal, which is Hindi for "Beloved", was contructed by Data on board the Enterprise-D in 2366.Show runner Gene Roddenberry was close friends with Kim Noonien Singh whose name he used several times in several formats for both Star Trek movies and the series. Data's Father's name is a derivative of Kim Noonien Singh.Data's head is 500 years older than his body because of a temporal disturbance taking him back to the late 1800's where he literally lost his head in an explosion. Once his head was found and after his head was blown off, LaForge was able to reattach it to Data's body.

Brent Spiner

Brent Spiner Pictures, Images and Photos

Bio:
Brent Spiner, whose primary claim to fame is his portrayal of the beloved android Data on the television series "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987), was born and raised in Houston, Texas. His parents, Jack and Sylvia Spiner, owned and operated a furniture store. Jack died of kidney failure at age 29, when Brent was 10 months old. When he was 6 years old, his mother married Sol Mintz, who adopted Brent and his older brother Ron. Although his mother divorced Mintz after 7 years of marriage, Brent retained his adopted father's last name until 1975 when he took back his birth name.Spiner first began pursuing his interest in acting while in high school. There his inspirational drama teacher, Cecil Pickett, gave a great start to the careers of a remarkable group of aspiring young actors (and directors), including Spiner, Cindy Pickett (Cecil's daughter), Randy Quaid, Dennis Quaid, Trey Wilson, Robert Wuhl and Thomas Schlamme, all of whom later attained success in Hollywood. After graduation, Spiner followed his mentor to the University of Houston and other local colleges, while also launching his professional acting career in theater (The Houston Music Theater and other regional theater) and in film (My Sweet Charlie (1970) (TV), which was shot on location in Texas). After a couple of false starts in New York and Hollywood, Spiner eventually established himself as a stage actor in New York, appearing in a number of off-Broadway and Broadway plays, such as 'A History of the American Film' (1978), 'Leave It to Beaver Is Dead' (1979), 'Sunday in the Park with George' (1984), and 'Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn' (1985). While in New York, he had a bit part in Woody Allen's Stardust Memories (1980) and starred in an independent film called Rent Control (1984). The play 'Little Shop of Horrors' brought Spiner to Los Angeles in 1984, where he eventually took up permanent residence. In 1986, after a number of character parts in television series and movies, such as "Robert Kennedy & His Times" (1985), Crime of Innocence (1985) (TV), Manhunt for Claude Dallas (1986) (TV), and Family Sins (1987) (TV), Spiner snagged the role that would bring him international fame: Data, the endearing android, whom Spiner played "by tapping into his inner child." "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987), the sequel to the original television series "Star Trek" (1966), became hugely popular, moving to the big screen for four films (so far) after its 7-year run on television. Aside from these films, Spiner has made cameo appearances in a number of films directed by his friend and old schoolmate Thomas Schlamme, such as Miss Firecracker (1989), Crazy from the Heart (1991) (TV), and Kingfish: A Story of Huey P. Long (1995) (TV), and has appeared in small roles in more recent films, such as Dude, Where's My Car? (2000) and The Master of Disguise (2002). Arguably his most popular film portrayal was Dr. Brakish Okun in Independence Day (1996), a role that elicited his unique eccentricity and sense of humor.

“Computer locate Lt. Arjin Djinx,” he stated.
“Lt. Arjin Djinx is located on the bridge.”
Edward headed for a turbo lift. Once entering he stated, “Bridge.” And off he went. Once he reached the bridge he saw Lt. Djinx and walked toward him.

Character Spock

Spock Pictures, Images and Photos

Spock was born in 2230, in the city of Shi'Kahr on the planet Vulcan. His father is well-known Vulcan ambassador Sarek, his mother is Amanda Grayson, a human teacher. Serving as an outstanding Starfleet officer for decades and later as an ambassador, Spock was probably the most famous Vulcan-Human hybrid in history.

During his childhood Spock was often teased by other children for being "not fully-Vulcan". He often seek his mother's care and advise in those days. He had a pet Sehlat called I'Chaya. At the age of 7 Spock has taken the Kash'Wah ordeal in the desert. During this test of survival his life was saved by a mysterious cousin of his named Selek (who was, in fact his future self from 2269). Later that year he was mentally bonded with T'Pring who he was supposed to have married during his first and only recorded "Pon Farr", a physiological mating urge that affects adult Vulcans approximately every 7 years.

When Spock returned to Vulcan upon his first Pon Farr fever in 2267, T'Pring chose the "Kah-li-fee" or Challenge, forcing Spock to fight for her with a champion of her choosing. She chose Captain Kirk as her champion. Wary of appearing weak in front of T'Pau, a high ranking Vulcan leader, Kirk accepted the challenge not knowing that the fight was to the death. After the first bout, McCoy was granted permission from T'Pau to administer an injection to Kirk to compensate for the Vulcan thin air. After winning the combat by killing his captain, Spock came out of the Pon Farr and released T'Pring from her betrothal to him. Believing that he had killed his captain and his friend, Spock was prepared to surrender command of the Enterprise to Scotty and submit himself to the authorities for murder only to find that Kirk was still alive as McCoy had given him a neural inhibitor that only simulated death.

Spock got into an argument with his father when he chose the career of Starfleet service instead of the Vulcan Science Academy. The two did not speak with each other for 18 years afterward. Spock graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2251. As a young lieutenant he served as science officer on board the U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701) under the command of Captain Christopher Pike. In 2254 he was a witness of Pike's capture by the inhabitants of Talos IV.

He was promoted to first officer when Captain James T. Kirk took command of the vessel in 2265. He served in that role during Kirk's legendary five-year mission (2265-2270). During this mission the Kirk-Spock-McCoy trio formed their legendary friendship. Spock often served as the logical, cerebral side of Kirk opposing the emotional Dr. McCoy.

After the end of the five-year mission Spock underwent the Kolinahr training on Vulcan, to achieve total emotional supression. He nearly succeeded but for the fact that he was suddenly in mental contact with a powerful intellect several light years away which stirred some emotions within him just as he was to receive the Kolinahr medallion. He returned to the Enterprise in 2273 when it confronted the V'ger entity.

Spock was eventually promoted to Captain and, under supervision at Starfleet Academy of one Admiral James T. Kirk, trained new junior officers.

On a training mission that turned into a real mission under Admiral Kirk in 2285 they went in search of the fate of the top secret "Genesis Device" and came under fire from old nemesis Khan, a late 20th century superhuman warrior from old Earth, a product of eugenics. While trying to save the Enterprise, Spock took a lethal dose of radiation and died. While his body was laid to rest on the "Genesis Planet" created by Khan's use of the device, Spock's mind and soul were transferred into Doctor McCoy who was later arrested in an attempt to get to the forbidden Genesis Planet. Kirk and crew spring McCoy and illegally head to the Genesis Planet in a stolen Enterprise to find a regenerated Spock and angry Klingons who like to shoot at them.

The crew dispenses the Klingons, rescues Spock and takes him home to Vulcan where his Mother and family attempt to re-integrate his McCoy-carried "katra" into his newly regenerated body.

In 2286 Spock, while still not whole, joins with the Enterprise crew in their stolen Klingon ship and returns to Earth for a court martial trial only to find the Earth under attack by a probe that is looking for extinct humpback whales. The crew go back in time and attempt to bring back a pair of whales to stop the probe's assault.

Spock and the Enterprise crew have further adventures on board the USS Enterprise-A. In 2287 Spock's brother steals the ship in search of "God" in the mysterious planet Sha Ka Ree. In 2293 Spock played a pivotal role in the peace negiotiations between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. The same year the Enterprise was decommissioned. Eventually Spock left Starfleet to become a Vulcan Ambassador where he eventually makes contact with Romulan "cousins" and travels to Romulus to educate and possibly re-integrate Romulus into the Vulcan state of being. Here (in 2368) he meets up with future Enterprise Captain Jean-Luc Picard, second officer Data Soong and Romulan functionary, Sela, daughter of Starfleet officer Lt. Tasha Yar on Romulus.

Spock will be called upon to help save Romulus with "Red Matter" to be injected into a Super Nova that is becoming a black hole, but the gravity well works faster than he and Romulus is sucked into the Super Nova black hole. As a result of this a Romulan named Nero goes ballistic and takes off on a personal mission against Spock, whom he views as the one who "killed" Romulus. Nero, a miner, creates a Black Hole and he and Spock, separately in different ships, get sucked into this Black Hole and emerge back in time in the "Old Days" changing their own past. This change affects everyone from Kirk to McCoy to Pike to Scotty to Sulu to Sarak to Spock's mother to Spock, himself. In the new Alternative universe Spock's mother dies after he goes to Starfleet academy and is aboard the Enterprise. In this new alternative universe Spock meets up with a young Uhura and falls for her, having an on-going affair with her. In this universe he starts off being adversarial with Kirk, but then becoming a friend to him. In this universe he meets his older self. Spock, as always, is the center of all things Trek and has been the constant since Chris Pike was Captain of the Enterprise. Mr. Spock is the focal point of the Trekverse past [Roddenberry, Coon, Berman] and Trekverse future [Orci, Kurtzman, JJ Abrams].

Bio:
Raised in a Boston tenement, acting in community theaters since age eight, Leonard Nimoy didn't make his Hollywood debut he was 20, a bit part in Queen for a Day (1951) and another as a ballplayer in the perennial Rhubarb (1951). After two years in army he was still getting small, often uncredited parts - an army telex operator in Them! (1954), for example - but his part as Narab, a Martian finally friendly to Earth, in the closing scene in the corny Republic serial Zombies of the Stratosphere (1952), somewhat foreshadowed the role which would make him a household name--Mr. Spock, the half-human/half-Vulcan science officer of "Star Trek" (1966) one of TV's all-time most successful series. His performance won him three Emmy nominations and launched his career as a writer and director, notably of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986), the story of a humpback whale rescue that proved the most successful of the Star Trek movies. Stage credits have included "Fiddler on the Roof," "Oliver," "Camelot," and "Equus." He has hosted the well-known TV series "In Search of..." (1976) and "Ancient Mysteries" (1996), authored several volumes of poetry and guest-starred on two episodes of "The Simpsons" (1989). He recently played Mustafa Mond in NBC's telling of Brave New World (1998) (TV).
